Driving down the main street in Historic Maldon, Victoria. Maldon was a boom town in the 1850's goldrush. Today the population is about 1000. Its one of Britains finest sights, to see a motley bunch of people stampede across the Blackwater River after New Year, waist deep in thick black mud. The idea is simple; 180 competitors line up on the bed of the River Crouch at low tide and race 400 metres toward Maldon town, crossing the icy water as they go.
